Box Score SHREVEPORT, La. ? The UALR baseball team (10-27) pulled out a 3-2 win at Centenary on Tuesday night, in a game which was called in the bottom of the seventh inning due to lightning. The Trojans led 4-3 at the time, but because the seventh was incomplete, the game reverts to the last completed inning.
Senior Mike Rogers (2-2) earned the win in his second start of the year by holding Centenary to four hits, one walk and two runs over 5.2 innings. Junior Matt Apfel went 3-for-3 with a RBI to lead the Trojans, while junior Clay Rominger went 1-for-3 and hit his second home run of the year ? a solo shot in the third.
The Trojans trailed 1-0 after four innings, but plated three runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Rominger tied the game at 1-all with his solo homer, and UALR capitalized on a pair of errors by the Gents to push across the go-ahead run. With junior Daniel Guffey on second and two outs, Apfel delivered a run-scoring single to make it a 3-1 contest.
The Gents went quietly in the bottom of the fifth, but rallied in the sixth when Ryan Bernsen hit a two-out double to right center. After stealing third, Bernsen came around to score when Steele Lewis singled to short. With the lead down to a run, Rominger took the mound for Rogers with the tying run on base and two outs. Rominger allowed a single to the first batter he faced, but escaped the jam by getting Tim Deering to ground out to second for the final out.
Both teams scored in the seventh, but the game was called in the bottom half with one out on the board.
Johnny Noland (2-4) took the loss for Centenary after allowing eight hits and three runs (one earned) over 5.1 innings pitched. Lewis went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI to lead the Gents.
UALR returns to action this weekend when it welcomes Houston Baptist to Gary Hogan Field for a three-game non-conference series (April 25-27).
