Box Score 2 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? The Valparaiso Crusaders (4-1)
earned a doubleheader sweep over the UALR Trojans (4-4) Sunday at Gary Hogan
Field. Valparaiso
took game one 2-0 before taking the series finale by the score of 10-8. The two
teams met Friday night, with UALR being victorious 5-0.
Valparaiso 2, UALR 0 ? Game One
Jon Gulbransen allowed just two hits and struck out eight
Trojan hitters in 8.0 shutout innings to lead Valparaiso to a 2-0 victory over UALR in game
one of Sunday's double header. With the victory, Gulbransen improved his record
to 2-0 on the season.
Trojan starting pitcher Adam Champion tossed 5.2 innings
allowing no runs on two hits while striking out nine. On the season, Champion
now boasts a 0.63 ERA in 14.1 innings of work and leads the team in strikeouts
with 19.
Gavin Gray was saddled with the loss for
UALR, dropping his record on the mound to 0-2 this season.
Valparaiso struck for both of their runs in
the top of the eighth inning. Dan DeBruin led off the inning with a triple and
he later scored on an error by UALR shortstop Zach Rowles. Kyle Muhlsteff then had a one-out RBI single to give
the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
Jared Miller came on in relief and retired all three
Trojan hitters he faced to earn the save.
The Trojans got their only two hits of the game from first
baseman Tyson Parks. Both of Parks'
hits were doubles, giving him five on the season.
Valparaiso 10, UALR 8 ? Game Two
Kyle Muhlsteff's fifth-inning bases loaded double to the
right center field gap provided a huge lift for Valparaiso in their 10-8 series-finale
victory over UALR on Sunday evening. Muhlsteff finished the game 1-for-4 with
three RBI.
Valparaiso added another run in the seventh,
making the score 9-4, before the Trojans would rally for four runs in the
bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead to 9-8.
The Trojans offense was paced in game two by Parks, who
continued swinging a hot bat. He finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and two
runs scored, including a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh. Parks
lifted his season average to .344 on the afternoon and now has seven RBI, which
is tied for the team-lead with Landis
Wilson.
Nate Brown also enjoyed a three-hit game,
improving his season average to .323. Brown also added an RBI in the contest.
In addition to Muhlsteff, the Crusaders had two hits
apiece from Damon McCormick, Ryan O'Gara, Matt Lenski and Kyle Gaedele. Lenski
also chipped in two RBI in the victorious effort.
Valparaiso starting pitcher Bryce Shafer
earned the victory to improve to 2-0 in 2009. He allowed four runs, three
earned, on eight hits while striking out nine Trojan hitters. Steve Godawa
pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Crusaders, striking out four and not
allowing a base runner, to earn his second save of the year.
Sean Potter was hit with the loss for the Trojans. Potter,
now 1-1, was rattled for five runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Trojans will continue action on Tuesday as they travel
to Norman, Okla. to take on the Oklahoma Sooners in a
doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
