Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? ULM (18-11, 8-6) scored in five-consecutive innings and rode a solid outing from starter Justin Anderson to a 9-3 win over the UALR baseball team (7-20, 3-11) on Saturday night at Gary Hogan Field. Anderson held the Trojans to six hits and three runs over 7.0 innings, as the Warhawks won for the eighth time in their last nine outings.
Anderson scattered six hits and racked up five strikeouts to improve to 5-1 on the year. Ben Soignier went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in the win, while Jon Prevost added a 2-for-5, two-RBI effort and belted his ninth homer.
UALR junior Jake Sullivan (3-3) retired the first eight batters he faced before running into trouble in the third, as ULM put together a two-out rally by stringing together four-straight singles. Perry Smith and Boomer Blanchard set the stage with consecutive singles, and Prevost and Soignier each followed with RBI base knocks to put ULM ahead 2-1. Prevost scored from third moments later on a double steal to make it a 3-1 contest.
The Warhawks tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead, with Prevost doing the damage in the fifth with a solo homer to left. ULM extended its lead to six runs, 7-1, in the sixth as a leadoff walk by Ryan McMillan and a double by Nick Wade led to a two-run single by Smith.
UALR scored a run off Anderson in the bottom of the second to take an early 1-0 lead, but the 6-4 southpaw blanked the Trojans over the next five innings to help ULM build an 8-1 edge. Anderson finally ran out of steam in the bottom of the eighth, surrendering a leadoff single to senior Kody Kroll before issuing a walk to senior Matt Apfel.
Josh Miller came on for Anderson with two runners on and no outs, but couldn't keep the Trojans from scoring as junior Nate Brown plated both with a two-run double to left center. UALR was unable to do any more damage off the ULM bullpen in the eighth, and Soignier added a solo homer to left in the ninth to bring the game to its 9-3 final.
Sullivan took the loss for UALR after allowing 10 hits and seven runs (all earned) over 6.0 innings pitch. Apfel and Brown accounted for four of the team's eight hits on the night, with Brown totaling two RBI and two doubles.
The two teams close out the three-game Sun Belt Conference series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
