Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? WKU (33-12, 17-5) banged out 18 hits and scored six unearned runs on its way to a 12-4 victory over the UALR baseball team (14-28, 5-15) in the opener of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Nick Denes Field.
UALR trailed 3-2 after 4 ½ innings, but the Hilltoppers scored eight runs over the next two frames, only two of which were earned, to put the game out of reach. Wade Gaynor, Terrence Dayleg and Logan Robbins tallied three hits a piece to lead the way for WKU, while Jared Andreoli led the team with three RBI. Gaynor scored three runs and stole two bases in the win, while belting his 19th home run of the year ? a solo shot in the fifth.
Senior Matt Apfel and junior Landis Wilson paced the Trojans with two hits a piece, while senior Jared Powell finished with a team-high two RBI, compliments of a two-run single in the eighth.
WKU starter Matt Hightower last just 5.0 innings, but improved to 6-1 on the year after holding the Trojans to three hits and two runs (one earned). UALR junior Jake Sullivan (4-5) took the loss after surrendering 11 hits, four walks and seven runs (four earned) over 4.2 innings of work.
The two teams return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
