SHREVEPORT, La. - The UALR swimming and diving team
picked up its first victories of the season Saturday night, capturing wins over
Centenary, Hendrix and Austin Colleges in a meet hosted by Centenary College. The Trojans defeated the Ladies from
Centenary by a final of 97-95, defeated Hendrix by a score of 127-63 and topped
Austin College by a final of 139-26.
"We
were extremely proud of how the team stepped up and raced today," said head
coach Amy Burgess. "It was exciting to see them work together as
a team and accomplish the wins."
The
Trojans dominated the freestyle events, winning four of five finals and earning
second-place in the fifth.
Megan Nelson picked up a victory for the
Trojans in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Nelson finished the race in 11:11.25 to get the win, while Krysten Rezac placed third in a time of
11:28.03.
Nelson
also earned a win for the Trojans in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in
5:27.69. Again, Rezac placed third, finishing
in 5:35.61.
Holly Myers earned a first-place finish for
UALR in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 2:00.32. Hope
Myers finished third in the same event following a time of 2:05.12.
In the
50-yard freestyle, Kara Raney won in
a time of 25.18. Sarah Beth Slinkard and Melissa
Martin finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event.
The
100-yard freestyle saw Paige Thoman
and Slinkard place second and fourth, respectively, to pick up points for
UALR. Thoman finished the race in 56.58
and Slinkard in 59.47.
Thoman also
earned a third-place finish in the 200-yard IM, finishing in a time of
2:18.23. Audra Stalzer placed fifth in the event.
Stalzer
would pick up a second-place finish later in the day. The junior finished the 100-yard breaststroke
in 1:13.14, while Hope Myers placed fourth in a time of 1:17.27.
In the
100-yard butterfly, Amber Kelly
finished second and Amy Tran
finished fourth to earn points for the Trojans.
In the
relays, UALR won the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:41.28. Holly
Myers, Jenna Rutecki, Kelly and Raney
earned the first-place finish for the Trojans.
In the
200-yard medley relay, the quartet of Thoman, Stalzer, Kelly and Raney finished
second in a time of 1:53.39.
Holly
Myers earned another second-place finish for UALR in the 100-yard
backstroke. Myers finished the race in
1:01.34, just behind Jo Claire Robertson for Hendrix. Rutecki finished fifth in a time of 1:05.14.
The
Trojans will be back in action next weekend with the Hendrix Classic on Friday,
October 29, and the Hendrix Relays the following day. Both meets will take place in Conway, with the Friday
races scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and the Saturday relays at noon.
