Box Score CAPE
GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (7-10) handed UALR
(12-5) its second-straight loss on Tuesday at Capaha Field, racking up 16 total
hits en route to a 10-7 win in the first of the teams' two midweek matchups.
Starter Tony Zerussen threw 5.0 strong innings for the Redhawks, giving up just
two runs on three hits while striking out three to pick up his first win of the
season.
The UALR bats picked up eight hits on the day, led by
two each from junior Myles Parma and
sophomore Bryson Thionnet. Thionnet
also scored two runs on the day, while senior Greg Garcia was 1-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.
Junior Tyler
Buckley (1-2) was dealt the loss for the Trojans. Buckley gave up five
earned on eight hits over 3.2 innings of work. Freshman Cameron Allen came on following a brief stint by junior Marshal Hamrick and gave up four runs
on five hits in 1.0 innings on the hill. Sophomore Elliot Velasquez and junior Bubba
Cooper combined to surrender just one run on three hits over the final 3.0
innings of play.
Southeast Missouri wasted little time getting on the
board, manufacturing a run in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single by
Cole Bieser, who moved to third on a passed ball and deep fly ball before
scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield off the bat of Trenton Moses.
The Redhawks added to their lead with four more in the
bottom of the third to make it a 5-0 game. Bieser again led off the inning with
a hit, this time a double to left center, and advanced to third on a deep fly
ball. He came home on a single by Kody Campbell, while Moses, who reached base
on an HBP, scored the second run of the inning off a double by Andy Lennington.
Campbell was thrown out on a play at the plate by the relay man Garcia to
prevent another Redhawk run from coming in on Lennington's double, but a
two-run homer to left later in the inning by Ryan Barnes tacked on the third
and fourth SEMO runs of the frame.
UALR put two on the board in the top of the fifth to
pull within a pair. A triple by Thionnet to centerfield plated senior Nick Rountree, who was hit by a pitch
earlier in the inning, and a groundout by senior Cameron Bentley scored Thionnet from third for run No. 2 of the
frame.
But the Redhawks answered with four runs in the bottom
of the fifth to push the lead to six, 8-2. A two-RBI single by Dalton Hewitt
plated two runs to start the frame, while a two-run homer off the bat of Derek
Gibson was responsible for the final two SEMO scores of the inning.
The Trojans tried to get back into the game with two
runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to again pull within two.
UALR put up two runs on a hit and two Redhawk errors in
the seventh, as both Bentley and Thionnet came home for unearned runs after a
throwing error by the SEMO shortstop. Then in the top of the eighth, Garcia hit
a three-run bomb with Guarno and Bignall on base to make it 9-7 game heading
into the bottom of the eighth.
A solo shot by Lennington in the bottom half of the
frame pushed the SEMO lead back to three, however. Parma singled to lead off
the ninth and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Redhawk reliever Bobby
Hurst was able get his second save of the season by striking out the final two
Trojans of the night.
UALR and SEMO will play their second midweek game on
Wednesday at 3 p.m. Left-hander Zack
Smith will get the start for the
Redhawks, while the Trojans' starter is TBA.
