MONTGOMERY, Texas – The UALR men's golf team placed first at the HBU Husky Invitational at Wood Forest Golf Club on Tuesday. After entering the day four strokes back of the lead, the Trojans combined for a team score of 285 to finish at 844 for the tournament, one stroke ahead of runner-up ULM.
Coaching in just his second Division I match, head coach Jake Harrington led UALR to its first win since the Red Wolf Intercollegiate at Ridge Point CC in April 2012.
Sophomore Matias Calderon and senior Nick Zimmerman tied for second at the event, finishing at five-under 208. Calderon fired his second consecutive round of three-under 68 on Tuesday, while Zimmerman turned in a one-over 72. Junior Johann Voss carded a one-under 70 in the final round to finish at one-over 214 for the event and tie for 15th place. Junior Alfred Kerstis shot a three-over 74 on Tuesday, putting him at three-over 216 and tying him for 19th place.
Host Houston Baptist placed third at the event with a combined score of 853, followed by McNeese State (859) and Florida Atlantic (863) to round out the top five.
ULM's Charlie Macneal captured medalist honors, finishing a shot ahead of Calderon and Zimmerman at six-under 207. Macneal opened with rounds of two-under 69 and four-under 67 on Monday before closing with an even-par 71 in the final round.
The Trojans return to action on Monday, Oct. 7 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C.
