Box Score TULSA, Okla. – UALR baseball (14-23) fell 5-3 to Oral Roberts (28-11) on Tuesday night.
Oral Roberts scored the first runs of the ballgame with an RBI single by Anthony Sequeira and a three-run home run by Noah Cummings.
"It was a tough game tonight as Oral Roberts edged us," head coach Chris Curry said. "We left some pitches where we didn't want to throw it, and they capitalized on it."
The Trojans responded in the top of the second inning with a leadoff triple by
Justin Steelmon. With an RBI single to right by
Jason Prevatt, Steelmon crossed the plate for the Trojans' first run. With two outs,
James Gillean reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second while Prevatt went to third.
Petr Sila delivered with single to right, scoring Prevatt and Gillean to decrease the deficit to 4-3.
No more runs scored for either team until the eighth inning. Oral Robert's Sequeira doubled to right center, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Cummings then singled through the left side, scoring Sequeira to give the Golden Eagles a 5-3 lead.
That would be all she wrote as UALR went down with three consecutive strikeouts to end the game.
"It was a disappointing loss," Curry said. "We were right there with a chance to win it, but grounded into a bases loaded double play. Again, we weren't able to get the big hit."
Stephen Chandler gave one of his best relief outings of the season as he went four innings and gave up just one hit on 50 pitches.
"
Stephen Chandler and
Brent Mason really threw well," Curry said. "It was as good as I've seen them throw all year. That was promising because they're going to be able to help us down the stretch."
Kyle Kirk extended his reached base streak to 17 games as he walked twice.
"There was improvement since our last meeting with them," Curry said. "It was good to see those guys throw well on the mound, and we'll to continue to work and get better."
UALR will continue its eight-game road trip with a three-game non-conference tilt at Indiana State starting on Friday at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
