Little Rock Heads to North Texas for Nonconference Competition

LITTLE ROCK - The Little Rock swimming and diving team will head to North Texas this Saturday, Feb. 6 in the final nonconference competition of the shortened season.

The meet will begin at 10:00 a.m. and feature a 16-event lineup including the 400 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay this time around. No spectators will be allowed, but the competition is planned to be streamed live on the North Texas swimming and diving Facebook page.

"Excitement has been mounting all week to hit the road, and after last weekend the team is ready to build off what they started," said head coach Amy Burgess. "Team trips were greatly missed last semester, and coming off another great week of training, we believe there could be some head-turning swims this weekend."

Little Rock was initially set to open the season at North Texas before the meet was rescheduled to this Saturday. Instead, the Trojans welcomed Ouachita Baptist to the Donaghey Aquatic Center last weekend for their home opener and senior day ceremony.

Last weekend's performances were strong across the board for a Little Rock team that has been training for months with no official competition. The Trojans already have eight swimmers that have posted a time within the top five standings of an event in the Missouri Valley Conference, in addition to the top time in the 400 freestyle relay and the second-best 200 medley relay time. Out of the eight total conference members, five teams have recorded official times this season, with Illinois State, Indiana State, and Southern Illinois having yet to compete.

Annya Grom sits second in a team-best three events: the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 breast. Regan Lawrence joins Grom in the 100 freestyle top times with the fourth-best mark so far. Lea Zengerling and Lily Kerr both add to the ranked freestylers with the fifth time in the 200 free and the 1000, respectively. Fer Moussier is currently third in the 200 fly and fourth in the 100 fly. Finally, Ashleigh Green, Brianna Ridings, and Lexie Shelton sit third through fifth in the 200 IM at this point in the season.

Little Rock will look to record more top performances at North Texas as the team gets rolling into the regular season. This Saturday will be the second of three straight weekends of meets for the Trojans, with the stretch of competition ending in their first conference matchup of the season against defending Missouri Valley Conference champions Missouri State on Feb. 13. Little Rock is picked to finish sixth at the MVC Championships.
