LITTLE ROCK – Annya Grom has been selected as the Missouri Valley Conference's Swimmer of the Week, announced the conference on Wednesday afternoon. The sophomore standout turned in two record-breaking performances at last weekend's tri-meet against SIU and Valparaiso, breaking the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle records to earn the league recognition.
Grom broke two school records this past weekend at the Little Rock-SIU-Valparaiso tri-meet, winning the 50 freestyle with a record-shattering time of 23.29 and finishing second in the 100 freestyle with a new Trojan record of 50.60. The previous records were 23.38 in the 50 and 50.72 in the 100, both set at the Missouri Valley Championships in 2019 by Lindsey Butler. Grom also anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay with a quick split of 50.14 to beat out SIU by just over two tenths of a second.
Both of Grom's individual swims were personal best times. Her 50 free time ranks second in the Missouri Valley Conference while her 100 free time ranks third. In addition, she helped the Little Rock 400 freestyle relay move up three spots to sit third in the conference thus far.
This marks the second year in a row that the Little Rock swimming and diving team has garnered a Swimmer of the Week honor. Teammate Asmalia Redzuan received the award last season, becoming the first Trojan to earn Swimmer of the Week accolades since 2016.
Grom and Little Rock swimming and diving team will compete one last time this season before heading to the Missouri Valley Championships, which will take place April 14-16. The Trojans will race at home in a virtual dual against Illinois State next Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m.
