BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – After leading the Ohio Valley Conference last week in assists and ranking second in rebounding, Little Rock's
Jaiyah Smith has been named the OVC's Newcomer of the Week.
Â
Smith's 13 total assists currently leads the OVC while her 6.5 assists per game ranks second in the league. Her 19 total rebounds and 9.5 rebounds per game both rank second in the conference. Of her 19 total rebounds, 15 came on the defensive end of the floor, a mark that leads the OVC.
Â
Those numbers, combined with an average of 9.0 points, nearly gave the transfer guard a double-double in her first week in a Little Rock uniform.
Â
Smith made her Little Rock debut on Nov. 10 by grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring seven points with six assists in a 60-56 win over UA-Pine Bluff. She followed that performance by scoring 11 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out seven assists and shooting 40% from the floor in a defensive battle against her former team, Ole Miss.
Â
The Newcomer of the Week honor is the first conference weekly honor Smith has won.
Â
Little Rock returns to the hardwood on Sunday, Nov. 20 when the Trojans host the Razorbacks on the newly christened
Joe Foley Court at the Jack Stephens Center. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. and
tickets for the game remain on sale.
