Anton Albers has been named one of six winners of the prestigious Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Award. The honor is the highest individual that can be earned by an OVC student-athlete, given annually to three men and three women for their accomplishments both in the classroom and in competition.
Albers had a memorable 2021-22 season, being named the Sun Belt Golfer of the Year, first team all-conference, a PING All-Central Region selection and honorable mention All-American and a second team CoSIDA Academic All-American. He closed out the 2021-22 season with 70.97 scoring average, the tops in program history, and ranked number 30 nationally in the final GolfStat individual rankings.
Albers closed out his senior season with 20 rounds of par-or-better in 30 rounds played, including 10 rounds in the 60s. He shot a program-record 64 on a pair of occasions, while his 8-under 202 at the Goodwin is tied for the lowest individual mark in program history. He registered top-10 finishes in eight of his 10 events, including winning the Little Rock Invitational and notching runner-up showings at the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate and the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
The Buchholz, Germany, earned his third-straight Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar honor last season and was named a first team CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree as well as he boasts a 3.96 GPA in finance, including a 4.0 during the spring 2022 semester. He was the leader of a Trojan team that captured the Sun Belt Conference title at Mystic Creek in El Dorado and made their second-straight NCAA Regional appearance and fourth in program history.
Albers was joined on the men's side by Tennessee Tech tennis player Jun Sasagawa and Morehead State rifleman Bryce Ward with SIUE's Jill Lambrechts (tennis), Morehead State's MacKenzie Neal (golf) and Tennessee Tech's Ruby Wyles (cross country/track and field) earning the women's honors.
The six winners were selected from a group of finalists by a vote of OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives. Honorees must have performed athletically with distinction, earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average and conducted themselves in a manner which has brought credit to the student-athlete, his or her institution, intercollegiate athletics and the OVC. The award is based on academic and athletic criteria/accomplishments achieved during the 2021-22 school year.
