JONESBORO, Ark. – Sali Kouorouma led all players with 22 points and was one of five Trojans in double figures as Little Rock rallied back from a 13-point second half deficit for a 73-69 win at Arkansas State Saturday afternoon.
Â
Little Rock (14-8, 7-3 Sun Belt) swept its in-state rival for the second straight year and in the final conference meeting between the two foes. Meanwhile Arkansas State (11-14, 4-8) lost to Little Rock for the eighth time in 10 games.
Â
Kourouma recorded her second career double-double as she grabbed 11 rebounds to go with her game-high 22 points.
Â
Trailing by 13 points early in the third quarter, Little Rock mounted a 16-2 run that turned a 48-35 deficit into a 51-50 lead. The Trojans would have to do the same in the fourth quarter, finding themselves in an eight-point hole at the 62-54 mark before embarking on a 16-3 run to go up by five with 47 seconds to go.
Â
The Red Wolves had plenty of chances to retake the lead but never would, committing three fouls and missing a 3-point shot in the final eight seconds of game play.
Â
Mayra Caicedo, who scored 13 points, hit a crucial free throw with 2.2 seconds remaining and Kourouma hit a pair of free throws with 1.8 seconds to go to seal the win.
Â
The output by Kourouma was the most in a Sun Belt game for the Trojan forward while Caicedo's 13 points fell just two shy of matching a career-high.
Tia Harvey scored 11 points and dished out a career-high seven assists while
Raziya Potter and
Dariel Johnson both scored 10.
Â
Shooting 49.1% from the field, Little Rock was effective on offense and continually worked the ball against A-State's zone, recording 19 assists on 28 made baskets. It marked the second straight game and the first time against a Sun Belt opponent this season that Little Rock had five players reach double figures.
Â
Arkansas State was led by Mailyn Wilkerson's 15 points while Morgan Wallace and Jade Upshaw each scored 12.
Â
Locked in a tie for third place with App State, Little Rock now turns its attention to the last two games of the regular season before the Sun Belt Tournament commences on March 2 in Pensacola, Florida. The Trojans begin the final week of play at UT Arlington on Thursday, Feb. 24.
