Little Rock Set for Final Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A 31-year tenure will come to an end next week but not for one last chance to claim a gold medal when Little Rock competes at the 2022 Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham.

The two-day meet, streamed on ESPN+, will mark the final indoor conference meet for the Trojans. Little Rock will move to the Ohio Valley Conference next year. That might be welcome relief for the other teams, especially after Little Rock's Cameron Jackson won the 60m dash and was named the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year just one year ago.

On Your Marks…
  • Little Rock heads to the 2022 Sun Belt Indoor Championships starting Monday, held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in the Iron City.
  • This marks the last indoor championship Little Rock will compete in as a Sun Belt member. The Trojans are moving to the Ohio Valley Conference next year.
  • The Trojans are looking to improve on last year's performance as the men finished sixth (out of seven) while the women placed 11th.
  • Cameron Jackson won gold in the 60m dash while Johnathan Jones claimed silver in the high jump. Both look to medal in this year's championship.
  • Eight of the 14 Trojan individuals that scored at last year's Sun Belt Indoor Championships.

Quote from Coach
"This is one of two meets each year, along with the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships, that we have to be at our best. This group knows what is on the line and wants our final season in the SBC to be our best. On both the men's and women's side we are down a few key athletes due to injuries but that will not hold us back as everyone else knows they have to step up." – J.P. Behnke

Three Things to Know
  1. Can Jackson Repeat?
Cameron Jackson won the 60m dash at last year's Sun Belt Indoor Championship and enters this year's championship meet ranked first in the league in the event. All eyes will be on the Trojan sophomore to see if he will repeat.
  2. Will Breya Clark Keep Setting Records?
When Breya Clark is competing, it's best to write in pencil. The Trojan redshirt sophomore is making a habit of breaking school records, particularly in the triple jump. Expect her to continue that this week as well as score in both the high and long jumps.
  3. Final Trip Around the (Indoor) Sun
This week's meet in Birmingham will mark the end of an era as it will be the final time Little Rock's Team competes at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships. The Trojans will move to the Ohio Valley Conference beginning July 1, 2022 and begin their new league affiliation after 31 years as members of the Sun Belt Conference.
