LAFAYETTE, La. – Tia Harvey finished Thursday's game just one point shy of reaching double figures. Turns out she and the Trojans only needed nine points out of the Little Rock sophomore guard.
Harvey hit both of her free throws with three seconds remaining to vault Little Rock from a one-point deficit to a one-point lead and eventual win as the Trojans edged Louisiana, 51-50, at the Cajundome Thursday evening.
Dariel Johnson recorded her first career double-double as she tied a career-high 14 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, using a mixture of 3-point shooting and free throws of her own to lead all players in scoring.
Azaria Robinson scored a career-high 12 points.
The win, Little Rock's third in a row on the road, handed Louisiana its first loss since Jan. 20 and marked the first for the Trojans over the Cajuns since before the pandemic began. It marked
Joe Foley's 825
th career win and was the only game in the Sun Belt Conference Thursday as a roof leak postponed Thursday's Arkansas State at ULM game.
Little Rock (9-8, 4-3 Sun Belt) led by as much as eight late in the third quarter before Louisiana (12-5, 4-3) used a 7-0 fourth quarter run to trim Little Rock's lead to one at 45-44. The two teams would trade baskets and free throws before Louisiana's Lanay Wheaton, who led the Cajuns with 14 points, gave the hosts the 50-49 lead on a jump shot in the lane with 49 seconds to go.
But Wheaton would foul out 43 seconds later as
Tia Harvey drove into the lane as the final seconds began to tick away on the clock, drawing the foul and sending herself to the line for the pivotal free throws.
Little Rock forced 18 turnovers out of Louisiana thanks to nine steals and limited the Cajuns to just four assists while dishing out 16 assists themselves, with none other than Harvey leading the way with five.
Mayra Caicedo tallied four of the Trojans' nine steals with Johnson grabbing another four. Caicedo also tallied five assists and was one of three Trojans to draw a charge.
The Trojans shot just 36.5% from the field while Louisiana managed a 42.9% clip.
Little Rock returns to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. tip-off at ULM.
