CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Bianchi brothers Paul and Matty competed in the freestyle tournament at the 2022 Bill Farrell Memorial International Open this weekend, with
Paul Bianchi making his return to the mat with a strong third place finish in the 61 kg division.
Bianchi first took out Shelton Mack from the New York RTC with a score of 7-5 to advance in the championship bracket before dropping a 10-0 major decision to second-place finisher Daniel DeShazer from the Gopher Wrestling Club. Paul came back in consolations, flipping the script to win 10-0 over Julian Farber of the Panther Wrestling Club before securing third place by earning an 18-16 victory over Josh Kramer from the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club in the consolation finals.
Younger brother
Matty Bianchi also had a respectable showing in the 65 kg bracket, falling to two-time NCAA champion Dean Heil narrowly in the first round by a score of 6-4. In the consolation bracket, he advanced over Danny Coles from Canada before facing four-time All-American Matt Kolodzik, where he gave up a 9-3 decision.
This tournament marks the beginning of freestyle and Greco-Roman season for wrestling, as the Trojans compete only in folkstyle during the NCAA season.
