LITTLE ROCK- Little Rock head baseball coach
Chris Curry has announced the hiring of
Brady Cox as the Trojans' new assistant, serving as the pitching coach for the program.
Â
"We are very fortunate to have a coach like
Brady Cox in our program," Curry said. "He is one of the bright young coaches in college baseball today. His knowledge of the game and development of pitchers, as well as his catching background, will be a great asset to our program. We're excited to have him and his wife, Madison, join the Little Rock baseball family."
Â
Cox comes to Little Rock after spending the past two years as the pitching coach at former Sun Belt rival UT Arlington. Hired before the 2021 season, Cox helped to lead the Mavericks to a second-place finish in the Sun Belt West division before making a run to the conference tournament semi-finals.
Â
In that 2021 season, the Maverick pitching staff struck out 485 batters, a program record, while only walking 188. He also coached pitcher Carlos Tavera, who had 117 strike outs on the year, was a first team All-Sun Belt selection, and a fifth-round MLB Draft pick with the Baltimore Orioles. In 2022, Cox's pitching staff had the least number of walks in the Sun Belt by 20, at a rate of 3.6 per 9 innings.
Â
Before starting his coaching career, Cox was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 36th round of the 2017 draft and spent three seasons in the Royals organization. He had 141 at-bats, finishing with three home runs and 18 RBI with an on base percentage of .347 in his career for the Arizona League Royals and Idaho Falls Chukars. In his final season in Idaho Falls, Cox appeared in 18 games on the mound, finishing with a 3.72 ERA and a 2.9 strike out to walk ratio.
Â
In college, Cox was a standout catcher at UTA from 2014-2017. In his junior season, he led the team in batting average (.365), hits (81), and on-base percentage (.427). That year he was named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation's top catcher, and was also a First-Team All-Sun Belt selection.
Â
A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Cox received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from UTA in 2017.

He has a great ability to make pitchers better. He has done it as both a catcher and as a pitcher which gives him a great platform to teach pitchers."
