LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – After a series victory over South Dakota State to begin the 2023 season, the Trojans will host UA-Pine Bluff at Gary Hogan Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before heading to Pine Bluff the next day to take on the Golden Lions at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
Â
Last Time Out
Little Rock won the Friday matchup on opening day against South Dakota State thanks to an offense that showed up early and often. The Trojans got out to an 8-1 lead after the first two innings and were able to maintain the lead throughout, winning 9-6 for the third opening day victory for the Maroon and Silver in the past four seasons. The Jackrabbits showed some resistance the next day, outlasting Little Rock in a pitcher's duel and winning the game 3-1. In the deciding game on Sunday both offenses took turns dealing blows, but it was Little Rock who came out on top in a hard fought 7-6 win that clinched the series.
Â
Seguine Shines
Newcomer
Alex Seguine got the starting nod at shortstop for the Trojans and took full advantage, going 6-for-12 at the plate on the weekend for a batting average of .500. The sophomore from Long Beach, California was a constant problem for South Dakota State pitchers, getting on base 57.1% of the time and coming around to score four times.
Â
Wins Aplenty
Austin Stubber has been credited with the first two wins of the season for the Trojans for his efforts coming out of the bullpen. The senior right-hander made appearances in both the Friday and Sunday games for Little Rock, pitching two innings in each outing.
Â
Brewer Times Four
Noah Brewer was pivotal in the series clinching win in Sunday's matchup, collecting four RBI in his 2-for-3 performance which included two doubles. His four runs batted in brought his total to six on the weekend as the junior first baseman slugged .636 in the three game set while also scoring twice.
Â
Soaring Skyler
Second baseman
Skyler Trevino left the yard twice during the three game set against South Dakota State last weekend. The first of which scored the first Trojan runs of the 2023 season when Trevino hit a three-run rocket over the right field fence in the bottom of the first inning on Friday, giving Little Rock the lead indefinitely in the 9-6 win. He would get his second homerun in the Sunday matchup, a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh that would wind up being the deciding run in the ballgame.
Â
Scouting the Golden Lions
UAPB enters the midweek series at 0-3 after being swept by Arkansas State to open up the season. The Golden Lions were outscored 13-28 in the series despite a one run loss in Saturday's contest. Junior Edwin Delacruz went 4-for-9 on the weekend with a pair of doubles as a highlight for the team. Drew Cates was also notable, collecting four hits and scoring three times while driving home two runs. Senior right-handed pitcher Jacob Riordan kept the Red Wolves in check for five innings in his Saturday start, allowing just four hits and one run with six strikeouts in his five innings of work.
Â
Series History
Little Rock and Pine Bluff have met 31 times previously with the Trojans holding a 25-6 edge in the all-time series, taking a four-game winning streak into Tuesday's game. The two teams met once in 2022, an 11-4 Little Rock win at Gary Hogan Field on May 3, as the Trojans are 4-5 in games played in Pine Bluff, losing the last two and are looking for their first win in Pine Bluff since 2011 on Wednesday.
Â
Three Things to Know:
- Wednesday's game will be the first game of the season that the Trojans will play away from Gary Hogan Field. Little Rock will not go on the road again until heading to Louisiana for a weekend series at Northwestern State beginning on March 17.Â
- These games are the first and second of nine matchups against in-state opponents this season. The Trojans will play both Arkansas State and Central Arkansas in home and home midweeks later this season, as well as a trip to Fayetteville for two games. The in-state action will conclude with the Trojans returning to Dickey-Stephens Park for a game against Central Arkansas on May 16.Â
- The Trojan offense is off to a hot start to the 2023 season, leading the Ohio Valley Conference in batting average through the first weekend at a team mark of .268. Little Rock will look to continue its momentum of a series victory in five games over the next six days.Â
