Jackson Wells Receives All-Region Honors

Trojan pitcher placed on South All-Region Second Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Little Rock sophomore Jackson Wells added to his growing list of honors for the 2023 season as the right-handed hurler was named to the 2023 ABCA/Rawlings All-South Region Second Team.

Wells, whose earned run average of 1.65 currently leads all of Division I, now lists Second Team All-Region next to Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, First Team All-OVC and a two-time OVC Pitcher of the Week honoree. He also has received Second Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball.

A Rogers, Arkansas native, the 2023 campaign was the first in the Maroon and Silver for Wells. He led the OVC in ERA for almost the entirety of the season. He finished the year as the league leader in ERA (1.65), complete games (2), hits allowed per nine innings (7.06) and walks/hits per innings pitched [WHIP] (1.13). He also finished second in the OVC in games started (15) and wins (7).

Overall on the season, Wells finished with a 7-4 record while starting in all 15 games he appeared in. Over 93.0 innings pitched, the sophomore allowed only 27 runs (17 earned) on 73 hits with 32 walks while fanning 80 batters. He tallied two complete games and combined for three shutouts while tossing one on his own.

He is one of only four players from the Natural State to receive All-Region honors this year and one of five players from the Ohio Valley Conference to be recognized.

Wells becomes the first member of the Trojan Nine to receive All-Region honors since Riley Pittman was awarded first team honors in 2019. It marks the 12th All-Region honor for a Little Rock ballplayer since 1999.

Entering the College World Series, Wells remains the nation's leader in ERA but LSU's Paul Skenes (1.77) ranks second in the nation while Wake Forest has Rhett Lowder (1.92) ranking fourth and Seth Keener (2.23) ranking 10th as the Tigers and Deamon Deacons head to Omaha. Little Rock has had three players previously be named an NCAA statistical champion – Greg Taylor in 1996 (0.61 doubles per game), Casey Crume in 1999 (0.55 doubles per game) and Ryan Scott (.435 batting average) – but Wells has a chance to become the first to do so from the Capital City in a pitching category.

The 2023 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-Region Teams were announced in all eight regions Tuesday. The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee.

The Chair of the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America & Coach of the Year Committee is Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State. The committee also includes Dean Ehehalt (Monmouth), Brian Green (formerly at Washington State), Dan Heefner (Dallas Baptist), Jeff Mercer (Indiana), Brian O'Connor (Virginia), Jim Penders (UConn), and Butch Thompson (Auburn).

First Team All-Region selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-America teams will be announced the morning of Friday, June 16 prior to the start of the 2023 NCAA Div. I College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
