LITTLE ROCK — As the wins stack up for the Trojan volleyball team, the accolades are following just as quickly. Earlier today, the Ohio Valley Conference announced its weekly awards, with
Bella Cherry named Offensive Player of the Week, and
Andrea Roman earning her fourth Defensive Player of the Week award this season. It's the third straight week Roman has been honored.
Â
"I'm very proud of these young ladies; they certainly deserve these awards and had a great week for our team and were a big part of why we were able to win three matches last week," head coach
Van Compton said. "Bella was extremely efficient with her attack; she was almost impossible to stop, and Andrea just continues to be a defensive force for us. Both of these ladies are vital to the success of our team and deserve to be recognized after a very good week on the court."
Â
Roman averaged 5.44 digs per set last week as Little Rock won three matches – all in straight sets – over UT Martin and Tennessee State (twice). The Trojans held opposing hitters to just .050 attacking for the week, thanks to the gritty play of the junior libero. Roman ranks 14th in the nation in total digs (308), and the Trojans are 19
th nationally in team digs (1,011) and 13th in digs per set (17.1), helping them hold opponents to just .171 hitting for the year, which ranks first in the OVC and 35
th in the NCAA.
Â
Winning this award for the fourth time means a lot because it's a reflection of how locked in our defense has been as a whole," Roman said. "We've been communicating, hustling, trusting each other, working really hard, and that energy makes it easy for me to do my job."
Â
Cherry posted at least a dozen kills in all three matches, hitting .500 in two of three contests last week. She also had a pair of double-doubles. In all, Cherry totaled 39 kills on .380 hitting with just nine errors in 79 attempts. She scored a total of 44.5 points over nine sets last week. Cherry ranks fourth in the OVC in total attacks (629) and leads the Trojans in kills (198) and points (222.5).
Â
"Being named Offensive Player of the Week means so much to me because it really makes me feel like all the hard work we put in every day is paying off," Cherry said. "I am also so grateful to have such an amazing team to play with. Our energy right now is so amazing, and we really all are playing for each other."
Â
The Trojans – 4-0 in OVC play – are on the road for two matches at SIUE on Friday and Saturday. They follow that with a road trip to Southern Indiana on Oct. 17-18.
