LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – After eight wins in a row and tying a 35-year-old record, the Trojans dropped an 8-6 decision to WIU Saturday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field.
The week was historic after knocking off No. 11 Ole Miss at Oxford, Miss., on Tuesday, and then the Trojans tied the 1990 club for the longest winning streak in program history with a win over the Leathernecks Friday night. The win also clinched the second Ohio Valley Conference series in a row. The Trojans' OVC streak ends at five.
"It was a tough one today. You hate for any winning streak to come to an end, but a really good run by the guys," Little Rock head coach
Chris Curry said. "Give credit to Western Illinois. They fought us all weekend. They kept hitting and hitting."
WIU (11-24, 5-10) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Trojans got one run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from
Ryan Geck.
Little Rock (18-20, 7-7) tied the game in the second when
Reed Willbanks hit a home run with
Angel Cano aboard.
However, WIU added two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth to take an 8-3 lead.
The Trojans didnt quit, though, as
Cooper Chaplain drilled a two-run homer and Cano added a solo bomb in the eighth to make it 8-6.
In the ninth, Chaplain came up again with two runners on but flew out to center field to end the game.
Seguine was 3-for-5 and Cano 3-4.
Seven pitchers made appearances for Little Rock Saturday. Reliever
Gage Haley took the loss.
The Trojans head to Fayetteville Tuesday to take on Arkansas in a two-game, midweek series.
