BOX SCORE
MARTIN, Tenn.
- Tennessee-Martin (4-3) captured
the 2005 Puma Skyhawk Invitational title with a 3-0 win over the
Arkansas-Little Rock women's soccer team on Sunday. The Trojans (1-6)
surrendered 14 shots on goal in the loss, with senior Marsha Stewart
tallying a season-high 11 saves on the afternoon.
"Today's game didn't go as planned for us but
I think a lot of that comes from the fact that this is our third game in
five days and with our lack of depth, our girls are just worn out," said
UALR head coach Greg Hess.
The Skyhawks led 2-0 at the half thanks to
goals by Jamie Ohlheiser and Lindsey Tilk. Ohlheiser scored at the 25:30
mark off a pass from Sarah Bedell. Tilk made it a 2-0 contest when she
scored off a penalty kick 41 minutes into the game.
UTM tacked on an insurance goal with 72:49 on
the clock when Jody Kiers scored off an assist from Katie Behrens.
Stewart's 11 saves bring her career total to
311, leaving her 20 shy of passing Stephanie Ledgerwood for first
place on the school's all-time list. UALR went 1-1 at the Puma Skyhawk
Invitational, and Stewart was a big reason why, as the senior goalkeeper
averaged 10.0 saves per game and recorded her first shutout of the year
(against Murray State). The Plano, Texas-native was rewarded for her
efforts with a spot on the all-tournament team and was joined by senior
defender Laura Cook.
"In my mind, Marsha was the player of the tournament," said Hess.
The Trojans return to Burns Park this week
for home matches against Southeastern Louisiana (Sept. 16) and Centenary
(Sept. 18). The two non-conference matches mark UALR's final preparation
for the start of Sun Belt Conference play on Sept. 30.
"Our schedule becomes a little more routine
now and hopefully our girls will be able to rest up," said Hess. "This
team will be ready to compete with the rest of the Sun Belt Conference
once league play begins."
