LITTLE ROCK, Ark.. - One hundred and 10 minutes of soccer wasn't enough time to determine a winner on Friday afternoon at Burns Park, as Arkansas-Little Rock (1-6-1) and Southeastern Louisiana (2-2-1) played to a 0-0, double-overtime tie.
Both teams had their chances over the course of the game, but missed chances on both ends prevented either team from coming out on top. The Trojans best scoring opportunity came in the final minute, as Jessica Beaver appeared set to score on a breakaway after a pass by Cindy Jenkins put her in prime position. Beaver's shot, however, sailed high, sealing the 0-0 outcome.
"I thought out girls fought hard all the way to the end today. The only way we can win with the limited numbers we have is to play as hard as we possibly can," said UALR head coach Greg Hess. "We had a golden opportunity with 30 seconds left and we just didn't capitalize on it. Granted the girls were out of energy, but we've got to finish those kinds of plays. Still, it is encouraging to get an opportunity like that after 109 minutes of soccer."
Senior goalkeeper Marsha Stewart registered 10 saves en route to her second shutout of the season. It marks the second-straight contest Stewart, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, has topped double-digits in saves. She heads in to Sunday's game with Centenary College, 10 saves shy of becoming UALR's all-time leader.
Senior defender Laura Cook finished with a team-high three shots on the afternoon, one of which was saved by SLU's Crista Wood. The Lions tallied 21 shots in the game (11 on goal), but could not sneak one past Stewart, who has blanked two of the Trojan's last three opponents.
"The difference in the game today was not making smart decisions. We have to become smarter soccer players, along with our added work load," said Hess. "On top of making better decisions, we have to capitalize on our opportunities, even if they are few and far between. If we can continue to fight the way we have over the last few games and become smarter players, I'm confident we can turn this season around."
The Trojans return to Burns Park on Sunday at 1 p.m., when they welcome Centenary College.
