BOX SCORE
MOBILE, Ala.
- South Alabama sophomore Kelly
Tarrant scored two goals on Friday night to lead South Alabama to a 2-0
win over the Arkansas-Little Rock women's soccer team. Though she was
unable to pick up a victory, UALR senior Marsha Stewart came up
with 10 saves on the night to surpass Stephanie Ledgerwood as the school's
all-time saves leader.
Tarrant tallied a game-high eight shots (six
on goal) and accounted for both goals to lead the Jaguars (3-2-1, 1-0) to
a win in the two teams' Sun Belt Conference opener.
"We knew about some of their players coming
in. I think (Tarrant) is one of the best players in the league, but we
just didn't stop her," said UALR head coach Greg Hess. "We came out
sluggish in the first half and they really took it to us. We played better
in the second half but were unable to create any scoring opportunities.
This team has to start playing with more intensity in the first half."
Tarrant scored her first goal in the first
half with 31:42 on the clock. Her second score came in the 76th minute and
gave the Jaguars some breathing room. Michelle Leppert was credited with
an assist on both goals.
Stewart, who leads the conference in saves
per game at 8.00, reached double figures in saves for the third time this
season. Freshman Maria Ferrato accounted for the Trojans only shot
in the loss.
UALR (1-8-1, 0-1) returns to action on Sunday
with a 1 p.m. match at Troy.
