Box Score TROY, Ala. ? The UALR women's soccer team (3-6, 1-1) evened its Sun Belt Conference record on Sunday afternoon with a 5-1 win at Troy, behind a goal and three assists from freshman Asia Rogers.
UALR faced a 1-0 deficit when play was stopped nearly 15 minutes into the contest due to rain and lightning. Vanessa DaCosta put the home team on the board with a goal 13:06 into the contest.
UALR came out of the play stoppage a different team, scoring four goals over the remainder of the first half to take control for good. Sophomore Cindy Jenkins tied the game at 1-all when Rogers fed her for her first goal of the season with 22:15 on the clock.
Rogers scored nearly seven and a half minutes later, off a pass from freshman Grace Rich, to put the Trojans on top for good. Rich made it a 3-1 contest two minutes later, scoring her third goal of the season off an assist by freshman Alison Davis.
“We went into the locker room after about 15 minutes because of the weather down 1-0. When we came back out we were finally able to capitalize on our chances,” said UALR head coach Greg Hess. “That's been a problem all year, but today we were able to take advantage of those opportunities. When you are able to do that, it changes the whole complexion of the game. It gave the girls some confidence today and they were very excited.”
Freshman Early Villegas scored each of the final two goals for UALR off assists from Rogers. Villegas' first collegiate goal came at the 41:34 mark of the first half. She then capped off the Trojans' scoring burst with a goal in the 75th minutes of the game.
The Trojans took 20 shots in the game, 13 on goal, and enjoyed an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Senior Ashley Boccarossa came up with four saves en route to her third win of the season.
UALR returns to Burns Park next week for bouts against Louisiana-Lafayette (Sept. 29) and Louisiana-Monroe (Oct. 1). The Trojans will take on the Ragin' Cajuns at 7 p.m. on Friday.
