Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? The UALR women's soccer team held a 2-1 lead with 14 minutes remaining in Friday night's meeting with Louisiana-Lafayette, but the Ragin' Cajuns rallied to send the game into overtime then scored the game winner with under three minutes to play in the first overtime period.
The Trojans (3-7, 1-2 Sun Belt) took a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute when freshman Hannah Gibson scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from freshman Dana Sahd. UL Lafayette (4-5-2, 1-2) goalkeeper Stephanie Weston went up top to try and make a save, but could not corral Gibson's shot.
In need of a goal, Stephanie Lynch came through for the Ragin' Cajuns in the 76th minute, beating UALR keeper Ashley Boccarossa on a free kick from 25 yards out. The two squads headed to overtime tied at 2-all and looked like they would need a second overtime session, when Callie Oliver followed a shot by Kristina Nadolski for the game-winning goal with 2:54 left on the clock.
“I thought our girls played a heck of a game tonight. They fought till the end,” said UALR head coach Greg Hess. “I thought we had the game won. We had ever opportunity to get a win, but a couple of defensive mistakes ended up costing us. You can't take anything away from Louisiana-Lafayette though. They fought the whole way and didn't give up.
“We managed to score some goals tonight and played well enough to win. It's just a shame it didn't end up that way on the score board.”
The Ragin' Cajuns took a 1-0 lead with 27:41 on the clock, when Lindsay Webb scored off a blast from 25 yards out. Webb's goal came off a corner kick which the Trojans deflected back to the middle of the field, and Webb promptly delivered to the back of the net.
The Trojans answered nearly 11 minutes later, when freshman Alison Davis scored her second goal of the year on a header in front of the net. Freshman Asia Rogers assisted on the goal (her fourth of the year). The score remained tied at 1-all until Gibson put UALR ahead nine minutes later.
The Ragin' Cajuns enjoyed a 17-to-10 edge in total shots (12-to-5 in shots on goal). Weston recorded three saves to pick up the win, while Boccarossa registered nine saves in the losing effort.
UALR returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Louisiana-Monroe at Burns Park.
