Box Score BOWLING GREEN, Kent. ? For the first time since Sept. 7 this season, the UALR Trojans soccer team (8-7, 3-3) has dropped consecutive games, losing to Western Kentucky (11-1-1, 6-0) by a 4-0 score. The loss ended UALR's six-game Sunday winning streak this season and was only the fourth time this season in which the Trojans were shutout.
“It wasn't a good weekend,” said head coach Greg Hess. “This road trip has always been tough. Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky are good teams. There's a reason why they (Western Kentucky) is in first place. They played really well. We did have some good breakaways. Their keeper made some good saves. Good teams just take advantage of opportunities.”
It didn't take long for Western Kentucky to get on the scoreboard as Lady Hilltopper Mallory Outerbridge scored her sixth goal of the season just 1:09 into the match. Western Kentucky added added two more goals in the half, as Nikki Workman scored in the 13th minute and Amy Schmitz scored in the 29th minute. Kellie Walker scored the final goal of the game in the 56th minute.
After only tallying five shots on Friday night, the Trojan offense had 13 shots with seven of them coming on goal. Trojan Alex Rustad had two of the seven shots on goal. Despite giving up four goals in the match, Trojan goalie Jane Picarelli still made ten saves in the game before giving way to Jamie Laughlin in the second half.
UALR returns home next weekend for their final two home games of the season. They will take on Denver Friday Oct. 19 at 6 pm. The final home game of the season finds the Trojans taking on conference co-leader North Texas on Sunday Oct. 21 at 1 pm. Both games will be held at the Burns Park soccer complex.
“Road games are always tough,” said Hess. “Four games on the road has taken its toll. We are excited to be back home and sleep in our own beds. Hopefully, we see some of the fire we had earlier this season. It's still going to be a tough weekend, though.”
