NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? The UALR Trojans women's soccer team (2-3) saw their offense explode for the first time all season as they took down the Lipscomb Lady Bisons (0-5) by a 4-1 score. Prior to the game, the Trojan women had only attempted 39 shots on goal. On Sunday, Lipscomb's Katie Shelton faced 31 shots with 14 coming on goal.
“I thought the women played really well today,” said head coach Greg Hess. “We obviously had a lot of opportunities today. We had control of the game from start to finish. We are glad we got the outcome we wanted today. Almost everybody got to play today, so it was a good for us. We got to play around and see different people on the field.”
UALR started the scoring when Jessica Beaver hit a header into the net off an assist from fellow Trojan Alex Rustad. The score remained 1-0 at the end of the 45-minute frame. It didn't take long in the second half for the Trojans to find the goal once again. In the 46th minute, Trojan Grace Rich found Beaver in front of the net and Beaver made the goalie pay the price as she scored her second goal of the day.
Lipscomb tried to mount a comeback when Lady Bisons' Halie Proffit scored on Trojans goalkeeper Taylor Hayes to make the score 2-1. That would be the closest Lipscomb would get to the Trojans as UALR's Laura Johnson scored in the 70th minute. In the 79th minute, Trojan defenseman Courtney Renfro also found the back of the net to finish the UALR scoring output for the game.
Hayes got her first win of her collegiate career, making three saves on the day. Fellow Trojan Jamie Laughlin got the start in net and only needed to make one save in the first half. Rustad ended up with two assists on the day.
The Trojans are back in action next Friday Sept. 14 when they travel to Tulsa, Okla. for the Oral Roberts/Tulsa University Invitational. UALR will face Oral Roberts on the opening day at 7 pm. UALR will face the host institution Tulsa Hurricanes on Sunday Sept. 16 at 11 am.
