Box Score CONWAY, Ark. - The UALR Trojans women's soccer team (4-4) evened their record as they took down the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears (2-4) by a 3-1 score. This was the first victory over Central Arkansas in three years, as both teams tied the past two seasons.
“I thought our girls played a great first half,” said head coach Greg Hess. We had a few opportunities we couldn't capitalize on, but Grace flew down the right side of the field and found Leanne. Then Grace flew by everybody to score her goal in the first half. In the second half, we gave some people some playing time and Central Arkansas pressured us a bit. They scored on a penalty kick, but Jamie made some great saves in the half. Grace came back with some intensity and scored her second goal. Overall, it was a good game, and it was nice to finally win a game on Friday.”
Trojan forward Grace Rich doubled her scoring output as she poured in two goals against Sugar Bear goaltender Heather Joye. However, it was Trojan freshman Leanne Mihelich who got the team started by scoring in the 32nd minute off an assist from Rich. Rich then followed up in the 41st minute with her first goal of the game, off an assist from Heather Pittman, to put the Trojans up 2-0 at halftime.
Sugar Bear forward Ashley Line tried to get Central Arkansas back in the game as she scored on a penalty shot against Trojan goalie Jamie Laughlin in the 46th minute. The score stayed 2-1 until the 80th minute when Rich scored her second goal of the game.
Trojan goalie Jane Picarelli played the first half and recorded two saves while Laughlin recorded three saves in the second half.
UALR returns to action this Sunday at Burns Park to take on Northwestern State. Game time is set for 1 pm.
