Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? The UALR Trojans women's soccer team (1-2) lost a hard-fought game to Missouri State University (3-0) by a 2-1 score in overtime. Both teams battled the elements as rain plagued Burns Park throughout the game. The game was even halted in the 72nd minute due to lightning.
Before the delay, the Trojans hung tough with the Bears as both teams fought to a 0-0 tie. After the delay, the Bears' Jenna Laughlin scored the first goal of the game from a corner kick by her teammate Lauren Heck. It didn't take long for the Trojans to answer as the Trojans' Grace Rich found the back of the net following a free kick from Heather Pittman. The teams battled all throughout the final ten minutes to end regulation all knotted up at one. It didn't take long in overtime for the Bears to score as Laughlin scored off a rebound from Meghan Cassidy.
“We came out flat and gave up an early goal watching one of their players jump in for an uncontested ball and she finished off a great header,” said head coach Greg Hess. “I thought the girls did a good job all day today. At the end of the day, we got to realize we are starting seven freshmen, and Missouri State is a team that I didn't know if they started any freshmen. For us to hang in the game, I thought we did a really great job.”
Jane Picarelli got the loss, stopping 11 shots from the Bears offense. The Bears' Jackie Jasper made four saves on the day.
The Trojans will return to action this weekend as they travel to Nashville, Tenn. on Friday Sept. 7 to take on Belmont. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 pm. The Trojans will follow that game up with a game against Lipscomb on Sunday Sept. 9 at 4:30 pm.
