LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? The Western Kentucky Lady Toppers (9-0-3, 3-0-2) scored two goals,
one in each half, while using a strong defensive effort to earn a 2-0 Sun Belt
victory over the UALR Trojans (6-7-1, 2-3) Friday night at Burns Park.
UALR managed just 10 shots for the contest with three of
those being on goal. Leading the way was junior Grace Rich with three shots, one of which was on goal. Jessica Beaver and Alex Rustad each added two shots.
WKU, who totaled 16 shots, scored their first goal of the
match in the ninth minute when Kellie Walker fought a goal past Jane Picarelli to give the Lady Toppers
a 1-0 advantage. Hayley Marsh was credited with an assist for WKU.
The Lady Toppers struck again 12 minutes into the second
half in the 57th minute when Amanda Buechel scored her fifth goal of the season
on a beautiful shot from thirty yards out to make the count 2-0.
The Trojans chances were kept to a minimum down the
stretch and WKU goalkeeper Libby Stout helped the cause by adding three saves
to her season total.
The 2-0 shutout win for the Lady Toppers marks the eighth
shutout they have had during the 2008 campaign, including their third straight.
UALR will attempt to end its losing skid at two games on
Sunday afternoon when they play host to Sun Belt foe Middle Tennessee
State. Game time is
scheduled for 1 p.m. at Burns
Park.
