Box Score JONESBORO, Ark. ? The UALR baseball team (16-32, 10-18) completed a three-game sweep of Arkansas State (20-34-1, 8-21-1) with an 8-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium. Three pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout for the Trojans, with sophomore Ashur Tolliver opening the game with 7.0 scoreless innings.
Tolliver (2-5) picked up his second win of the year by holding the Indians to just four hits in 7.0 innings of work. Senior Steve Gilgenbach worked a perfect eighth inning (with two strikeouts), before senior Nathan Parker closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
The series win over ASU marks the Trojans second Sun Belt Conference series win of the season, and their first sweep since taking three games from Troy last season at Gary Hogan Field (May 4-6, 2007).
UALR scored three runs with two outs on the board in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. With runners on the corners and two outs, senior Tommy Mousel made it a 1-0 contest with a base knock to right. Senior Daniel Guffey, who went 4-for-4 with three RBI on the day, followed two batters later with a two-run single through the right side.
UALR extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the third when junior Kody Kroll hit a two-run single to right with the bases loaded. Leading 5-0 in the top of the sixth, Mousel connected for his first career homer, a solo shot, to give UALR a 6-0 lead. Guffey added a RBI single in the frame to put the Trojans ahead 7-0. UALR tacked on an unearned run in the seventh to bring the game to its 8-0 finale.
ASU starter Joel Boeschen (3-5) was credited with the loss after allowing five runs, four hits and two walks over 2.1 innings of work. Chris Bullington worked the next 5.2 innings for ASU, surrendering six hits and three runs (one earned), with six strikeouts.
Saturday's game marked the final contest of the 2008 season for UALR.
