Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The UALR Trojan soccer team fought
hard for 90 minutes but came up short Friday night at Burns Park Soccer Complex
as they dropped their Sun Belt Conference opener to the Troy Trojans by the score
of 2-0.
UALR (3-6, 0-1) had just seven shots in the contest, five
of which came off the foot of sophomore forward Christina Veasley. Two of Veasley's shot were on frame and they
were both saved by Troy goalkeeper Ashley
Branham. Rachael Maina recorded one
shot and Jacquelyn Paz had one shot
that just missed finding the net as it bounced high off the cross-bar.
Troy (5-3-1, 1-0) opened the scoring in
the 30th minute when Bridget Duke converted from eight yards out for her fifth
goal of the year. Niki Stamaris earned her team-best sixth assist on the play.
UALR picked up the intensity in the second half, but they
could not find the equalizer which allowed Troy to widen the gap to 2-0 on Mandy Miley's
third goal of the season, after she was served by teammate Mary Morris.
In the game, Troy
out-shot UALR 22-7 and led in shots on goal 10-2. Morris and Laura Hopson led Troy with five shots
apiece while Duke added four of her own.
UALR junior goalkeeper Jane Picarelli spent all 90 minutes in the goal for the Trojans and
recorded eight saves on the evening.
The Trojans will try again for their first conference
victory of the 2009 season on Sunday when they host South Alabama at Burns Park.
