Box Score LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The UALR women's soccer team
(4-8, 0-3 SBC) was unable to hold off a late rally by Western Kentucky (4-4-2,
2-1 SBC) Friday night at Burns
Park, as the Trojans
dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to the Hilltoppers. UALR held a 1-0 lead late in the second half,
but two quick goals by WKU in the final ten minutes created and sealed the
Hilltopper comeback.
After a
scoreless first half that saw both teams combine for just six shots in the first
45 minutes, the Trojans broke the 0-0 tie nine minutes into the second half.
Freshman
Adrianna Queen, who picked up her second start of the season in the game, lit
up the scoreboard in the 54th minute to make the score 1-0,
Trojans. Queen converted after taking a
pass from Rachel Maina on the right side of the box and beating the keeper to
the opposite corner.
The goal
was Queen's second of the season while the assist was also Maina's second of
the year.
For the
next twenty minutes, the UALR defense fended off an aggressive offensive attack
by the Hilltoppers. WKU put up four
shots in that time, three of which were saved by Jane Picarelli.
The
Hilltoppers would finally get on the board, however, in the game's 81st
minute. With just under ten minutes
remaining, Laura Ray took a pass from Sidney Sisler and beat Picarelli to even
things up at one.
The goal
was Ray's first of the year.
Then, just
over two minutes later, WKU would get the go-ahead goal when Kelsey Meyer
scored shortly after a Mallory Outerbridge corner kick.
Outerbridge's
corner kick would come down in the center of the box and in the middle of heavy
traffic. Following a scramble for the ball by both sides, Meyer was able to get
free and beat the keeper for the game-winner.
For the
game, Western Kentucky outshot UALR 9-6,
including 6-3 in shots on goal. In
corner kicks, the Hilltoppers led 5-2, while UALR was whistled ten times
compared to nine for WKU.
WKU
goalkeeper Libby Stout made two saves in goal and picked up the win, while
Picarelli made four saves in defeat for UALR.
The
Trojans return to the pitch this Sunday when they will take on Middle Tennessee
in another Sun Belt Conference matchup.
Kick off is slated for 1 p.m. at Burns Park.
