Box Score DENVER, Colo. - The UALR women's soccer team
(6-12-1, 2-7-1 SBC) was unable to pull off the upset of No. 21 Denver (16-2-0,
10-0-0 SBC) Sunday afternoon, falling in overtime by a score of 3-2. A pair of freshmen, Holly Holland and Adrianna
Queen, tallied goals for the Trojans while Jane Picarelli made 11 saves between the pipes.
The two teams
traded goals throughout regulation, with the Pioneers taking the lead early in
each half and the Trojans finding a way to answer shortly thereafter. However, Denver's Kaitlin Bast scored her second goal
of the match in the 96th minute to give the Pioneers the win and
keep their Sun Belt Conference record at a perfect 10-0.
In
addition to the golden goal, Bast would kick off the scoring for Denver as well. In the game's seventh minute, the sophomore
capitalized off an attempted header by teammate Katy Van Lieshout, putting the rebound
past Picarelli to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Van
Lieshout and Nicholette DiGiacomo were credited with assists on the play.
The
Trojans would find the equalizer later in the half. Following an Olivia Carrasco shot that deflected off the crossbar, Holland headed in her
second goal of the season in the game's 32nd minute to knot the
score at one.
However, The
Pioneers regained their one-goal advantage early in the second half. In the 61st minute, Kalie Vaughn
took a pass from Megan Flannery in the top right corner of the box and scored
to give Denver
a 2-1 lead.
UALR would
answer again, however, just 90 seconds later.
Queen tied the score at two following a run down the right side of the
pitch. The freshman beat the Denver keeper to the far
post for her sixth goal of the season, tying her with Christina Veasley for the team lead.
For the
game, Denver
outshot UALR 40-12, including 14-6 in shots on goal. The Trojans committed 17 fouls to the
Pioneers' nine, while Denver
led in corner kicks, 6-1.
In
addition to Holland
and Queen, Carrasco, Veasley and Jacquelyn Paz each put shots
on frame for UALR.
With the
win today, Denver
clinched its fifth SBC regular season title and earned its 16th consecutive
conference victory.
The
Trojans will return to Burns Park for their final match of the regular season, an
October 29 contest against rival Arkansas
State. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.
