Trojans Fall Behind Early, Drop 3-1 Decision at Memphis

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers (2-0), currently ranked as the 47th best team in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer.com, topped the UALR Trojans (1-1) by a final of 3-1 at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Sunday. The Tigers went up 3-0 on a Taylor Isenhower goal in the second period before UALR freshman Ariel Galletti scored unassisted to bring the match to its final tally.

Memphis, a team that's won the last four women's Conference USA soccer titles, entered the game fresh off a 3-1 defeat of LSU on Friday night. Against the Trojans on Sunday, the Tigers built a 2-0 advantage in the first half with goals by Melissa Smith and Kylie Davis.

Smith's goal came in the 10th minute when she took a cross from Kelley Gravlin and beat UALR junior goalkeeper Michelle Pittman from the lower right corner of the box. Davis then put the Tigers up 2-0 when she received a pass from Lizzy Simonin in the 33rd minute and scored from 16 yards out.

Pittman, making the second start of her UALR career, made nine saves against a talented Memphis offense that managed 29 shots in Sunday's contest and has already produced six goals by six different players through their opening two matches.

After Isenhower put the Tigers up three in the 76th minute, Galletti scored the first goal of her career just three minutes later to make it a 3-1 contest. A freshman from Lake Balboa, Calif., Galletti joins freshman Alyson Rohane to give the Trojans two newcomers who have already found the back of the net through the first two matches.

UALR put up six shots on the day. Galletti and Christina Veasley got off two apiece, while Rachael Maina and Adrianna Queen contributed one each.

Memphis led UALR 9-2 in corner kicks, while the Trojans committed five fouls to the Tigers' three.

UALR will return to the pitch on Friday, August 26 when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to take on Northwestern State. Start time for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
