TOPEKA, Kan. – The Little Rock swimming and diving team began the Kansas Classic today, the first of three days comprising the midseason meet. Despite competing against six other tough Division I teams, the Trojans had seven swimmers qualifying for the evening final sessions, along with A, B, and C relays for both the 200 free and 400 yard medley relays.
"Today was one of the better starts we've had for the first day of a championship," said head coach
Amy Burgess. "We had almost 100% in season best times and multiple lifetime best. We're looking forward to keeping the momentum going tomorrow and get some more second swims!"
200 Free Relay
The A team, made up of freshman
Asmalia Redzuan, junior
Regan Lawrence, junior
Lexi Carr, and freshman
Khadijah Brown, dropped over two seconds off of their seed time, posting a 1:36.87 for 13th overall. The B squad of senior
Charis Won, freshman
Fer Moussier, freshman
Sylvia Shaw, and sophomore
Carolyn Godwin also scored points, putting together a time of 1:38.28.
500 Freestyle
Lea Zengerling shaved off nearly 13 seconds from her in-season best so far this year, recording a 5:05.38 to make it into the coveted B final. The sophomore finished sixteenth overall to score for Little Rock. Redzuan also got a second chance in the 500, taking second place in the C final. She touched the wall at a lifetime best 5:04.49, nearly six seconds faster than her time from prelims.
200 IM
Godwin was the top finisher for Little Rock, placing sixth in the C final with a time of 2:09.11. She was joined by fellow finalists
Jessie Baldwin and
Ashleigh Green, each swimming in the D final. The senior placed 29th with a time of 2:10.94 while the freshman recorded a 2:11.86 for 30th. All three dropped time at night from their morning swims.
50 Free
Brown and Lawrence each got to swim three 50 freestyles, between prelims, finals, and the free relay. Brown tied for 27th with a time of 24.52 at night in the D final, while Lawrence posted a 24.61 for third in the E final.
400 Medley Relay
Dropping five seconds from their seed time down to a 3:54.38 included Moussier, Ristroph, Godwin, and Redzuan in the 16th-place A squad. The C relay of Won, freshman
Taylor Baldacci, sophomore
Katelyn White, and Lawrence ended up out-touching the B relay, posting a 3:59.72.
