LITTLE ROCK – After a pair of weekends in which Mother Nature had the upper hand, Little Rock will try and get back to full competition this week in Jonesboro, competing at the Arkansas State Red Wolves Open Saturday.
2019 Red Wolves Open: Schedule | Heat Sheets | Live Results
Originally scheduled to be an off week fot the Trojans, head coach
J.P. Behnke added the meet at Arkansas State after a pair of weekends that saw weather-shortened meets. The Trojans had to end its home meet with eight events remaining on April 6 due to inclement weather and extended storms and hazardous conditions forced Little Rock to withdraw from the UCA Open in Conway last Saturday.
"We added this meet to the schedule because we have a few athletes who have not raced in awhile due to thunderstorms the last couple weekends," Behnke said. "It will also be beneficial to preview the Arkansas State track since they will be hosting the Sun Belt Championship in three weeks."
The trip to Jonesboro may prove to be beneficial for the Trojans as Little Rock will get a chance to compete at the site of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championships in May. But the meet won't be completely without weather issues as storms throughout the state of Arkansas have forced the Red Wolves Open to adjust its schedule from a two-day meet to a one-day event.
Competition will get underway at 10 a.m. with the throwing events, followed by the jumps getting underway at 12 p.m. The running events will take place concurrently, starting with the 1,500 meters at 10:30 am. and leading up to the 4x400 meter relays, expected to get underway at 4 p.m.
Nearly the entire Little Rock team will head to Jonesboro, with the lone exception being senior
Shanieke Watson. She will head to the west coast to compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, California, being held Thursday through Saturday.
Little Rock is hoping the weather will cooperate and allow the entire team to compete for the first time in nearly four weeks as Little Rock tries to build off some strong performances over the past few weeks. The Trojans notched 10 event champions in its home meet on April 6 and had all eight competitors finish among the top-four in their respective events in Conway, including Ryan Amador finishing first in the men's hammer and third in the discus, Nghia Dinh placing second in the men's long jump and
Vianney Sanchez finishing second in the women's 5,000 meters.
