JONESBORO – A trio of Trojans have advanced to Sunday's finals at the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championships at the Arkansas State Track and Field Complex. Keshawn Andrews (100 meters), Noah Smith (800 meters) and Emilio Medina (1,500 meters) will represent Little Rock in the finals of their respective events.
Sun Belt Conference Championship Results
Competing on the second day of preliminaries, Andrews placed second in the qualifying round of the men's 100 meters with a time of 10.45, setting a new personal-best in the event. Andrews finished first in heat two of the event as he looks to claim his second career Sun Belt Championship.
Noah Smith qualified for the finals of the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:53.39, finishing seventh among all competitors. The run was a new career-best for Smith, besting his previous time of 1:53.76 set earlier this season on the same track at the ASU Red Wolf Open.
Reigning mile champion Emilio Medina also qualified for the finals of the 1,500 meter run, finishing 10th with a time of 3:59.38, besting his previous career best by nearly two seconds. Medina finished fifth in the first heat of qualifying as he seeks his second career All-Sun Belt Conference mark.
Little Rock picked up its first points of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championships on the women's side as
Shanieke Watson placed third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:34.79, garnering six points for the Trojan women.
A number of Trojans just missed qualifying for the finals of their respective events, including
Aaliyah Lacy finishing ninth in the women's 200 meter dash with a time of 24.60, just 0.05 seconds off the eighth-place finisher. Andrews placed 10th in the men's 200 meters (21.59) while Jalen Black finished ninth in the men's 400 meters (49.10). 0.11 seconds off the qualifying time.
Sunday's competition gets underway at 11:30 a.m. with
Sierra Towles competing in the women's discus, followed by Nghia Dinh in the men's triple jump and Ryan Amador in the men's discus. The running event finals begin with the 4x100 meter relays at 4 p.m. with the men's 1,500 meters at 4:20 p.m., the men's 100 meters at 5:15 p.m. and the men's 800 meters at 5:30 p.m. Full final round coverage will be available on ESPN+.
