LITTLE ROCK - Continuing to build their momentum with three games down and seven to go in the regular season, the Little Rock soccer team will host Central Arkansas in the second installment of the Governor's I-40 Showdown, presented by Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield, on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 6:00 p.m. The evening matchup will also serve as a quick pause in conference play before the Trojans hit the road for Louisiana and ULM the following weekend.
The Sunday game will also be Fan Appreciation Night, where all attendees will be offered free soccer stress balls, Little Rock laptop stickers, and treats from the Loblolly food truck. Please note that while fans are encouraged to come cheer on Little Rock in person, social distancing guidelines must be followed.
Coach's Preview
The Trojans have continued to visible improve with each game under their belt, and tomorrow's matchup should be no different. Seniors Morgan Smocovich and Doro Greulich both have a goal to their name, also leading the team in points. Smocovich has moved into a leadership position on the team, recording three shots on goal and six shots, while sophomore Mari Young is also aiding the attack with a team-best four shots on goal so far this season. Abril Lucio is also one to watch, as both of the junior's attempts were just inches away from hitting net in the last match. In addition, look out for the defensive stronghold of Bergros Asgeirsdottir, Julia Edholm, Allison Morrison, and goalkeeper Saskia Wagner, who have all played every minute of each game. The rock-solid squad is joined by defender Natalee Geren, another standout member of the back line.
After Friday's match, head coach Mark Foster was confident that it was Little Rock's best performance of the season yet. "When we continue to get a few more games under our belt and get match fitness and little bit more experience for this group, I'm really excited to see their potential," he said following the game. "Every game we've gotten progressively better, so if we can keep climbing the mountain, I'm excited."
A Glance at the Matchup
Central Arkansas, despite not playing an official conference schedule of their own this fall as the Southland Conference has chosen to simply allow teams to play at their own discretion, is 4-1-1 on the year. Both the Bears and the Trojans played each other to open their respective seasons, but Little Rock was down several members of their squad in the first contest. The Trojans will be eager for a rematch against a team that has only conceded to the Red Wolves, especially with a full, confident roster.
