Trojans Tenths Off School Record on Day One of MVC Championships

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Little Rock swimming and diving team opened the 2020 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Championships this evening, kicking off the four-day meet with both the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay. Both relays finished sixth in the eight-team field, with the 200 medley relay finishing only two tenths away from the Little Rock school record.

200 Medley Relay
The meet opened with a big team effort from junior Regan Lawrence, freshman Annya Grom, freshman Fer Moussier, and sophomore Carolyn Godwin in the scoring A relay, posting the second fastest time in Trojan history with a 1:44.31 – exactly two tenths off of the program record. Each member of the relay will be returning next year, along with a promising incoming class, putting that record in danger for 2021.

The A team finished comfortably sixth in the eight-team field, less than a second and a half behind fifth-place finishing Illinois State but over two seconds ahead of seventh-place Evansville. Grom's 28.74 was the third fastest breaststroke split in the entire pool as one of four swimmers under the 29-second barrier, and quicker than the breast leg on both of the top-two finishing relays.

800 Freestyle Relay
The shortest day of the meet wrapped up with the longest relay event. The young scoring squad of freshman Asmalia Redzuan, Moussier, freshman Fernanda Gamez, and sophomore Lea Zengerling finished sixth once again in their heat with a time of 7:36.73, dropping over 14 seconds from their seed time. The time is just a couple tenths off of the third fastest relay in program history.

The Trojans once again beat out Evansville and Valparaiso, but were only three seconds behind Southern Illinois. While electronic splits were not recorded properly due to touchpad error, the relay team's approximate hand splits were 1:51.93 (Redzuan), 1:55.17 (Moussier), 1:55.61 (Gamez), and 1:53.69 (Zengerling).
