LITTLE ROCK - The Little Rock soccer team will face its in-state conference rivals in the Trojans' second game of the spring season this Saturday, March 6 at 2 p.m. in Jonesboro, Arkansas. It will Little Rock's third time battling the Red Wolves during the 2020-21 academic year, as the two met twice during conference play. Currently the match is planned to be streamed on ESPN+.
Although the Trojans already participated in its conference schedule as well as the Sun Belt tournament in the fall, meaning that this match will not count toward its conference record, spring games are countable toward their regular season record this year due to several NCAA schools deciding to postpone play.
Coach's Preview
"Saturday's game will be another great opportunity for us to build up match fitness and confidence against a top team from our very own Sun Belt conference," said head coach Mark Foster. "We've had a great week's training and preparation for this game and I can't wait to see how the girls perform on Saturday."
With one game now under their belt, the Trojans also have a starting point to improve upon: "I thought we defended very well against Oklahoma State, but we need to be more confident and express ourselves when we are in possession of the ball," added Coach Foster.
A Glance at the Matchup
Arkansas State finished as regular season champions in the fall, but the Trojans were arguably their toughest opponents. Little Rock was the only team that held A-State to a draw and did not allow a single goal in a match this fall thanks to a tough defensive performance by the Trojans at home. The Red Wolves swept all three other West Division teams in conference play (Louisiana, Texas State and ULM) before falling to South Alabama 1-2 in the finals of the Sun Belt Championship. Notably, South Alabama also ended Little Rock's season in the conference championship, but the Trojans ended double overtime tied 2-2, only failing to advance in the bracket after the match was brought to penalty kicks.
Little Rock kicked off the spring season against the #12 Oklahoma State Cowboys, falling 3-0 but gaining valuable experience as 16 out of the 22 Trojan soccer players are underclassmen. Meanwhile, the Red Wolves will have to shake the dust off of their cleats, playing against the Trojans in their first match of the spring.
