ST. LOUIS - Eight members of the Little Rock swimming team were named to the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Scholar-Athlete Team, an honor that recognizes their efforts both in the pool and in the classroom. The Trojans honored by the league include seniors Carolyn Godwin, Katelyn White and Lea Zengerling, juniors Annya Grom and Asmalia Redzuan, and sophomores Rylie Discenza, Aubry Matthews and Cheryl Poulsen.
MVC Scholar-Athlete honors require athletes to have completed at least one year at their institution and achieve either:
- a 3.3 grade-point average while obtaining All-Conference Honors
- a 3.5 grade-point average and top-16 finish in an individual event at the conference championships
- a 3.8 grade-point average and participation in the MVC Championships
The Missouri Valley Conference had an outstanding 79 student-athletes on the scholar-athlete team this season for swimming and diving. In the 2021-22 season, 17 of these scholar-athletes had a perfect 4.00 GPA, including Little Rock's Lea Zengerling.
Zengerling also posted a top-8 finish in the 500 freestyle to earn MVC All-Conference Honorable Mentions on top of her straight-A efforts in the classroom.
Fellow seniors Carolyn Godwin and Katelyn White also made the list, while the former earned MVC All-Conference Honorable Mentions by helping the Trojans to a second-place podium finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The pair finish their time at Little Rock with grade-point-averages of 3.91 and 3.97, respectively.
This recognition also tops off Asmalia Redzuan and Rylie Discenza's Trojan careers, as the pair are both graduating early. The former posted a top-16 finish in the 100 butterfly to score team points at the Championships last week. Redzuan leaves Little Rock in three years with a grade-point-average of 3.66, while Discenza graduated in just a year and a half with an impressive 3.91 GPA.
Meanwhile, Annya Grom, Aubry Matthews and Cheryl Poulsen will return for Little Rock next year, leading the team with stellar marks in the classroom. Matthews boasts a 3.94 GPA, followed closely by Grom's 3.92 and Poulsen's 3.76.
On top of her academic success, Grom was the sole Little Rock swimmer to earn MVC All-Conference Honors for the second year in a row, while Poulsen added a top-16 finish in the 100 freestyle as well as joining the Trojans on the runner-up 400 freestyle relay for MVC All-Conference Honorable Mentions.
