Sali Kourouma Named OVC Player of the Week

Trojan forward led league in scoring and blocked shots last week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Little Rock forward Sali Kourouma was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Week following an explosive set of games where she averaged 23.5 points per game and led the league in scoring and blocked shots.

Helping guide Little Rock to wins over Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State last week, Kourouma led the OVC in total point scored (47), points per game (23.5) and blocked shots (5) while finishing second in the league in rebounding (18 total rebounds, 9.0 rpg), behind only teammate Angelique Francis.

The only OVC player to score 20-plus points in multiple games last week, Kourouma twice barely missed on a double-double as she finished with nine rebounds in both games. The native Malian scored a game-high 22 points in a 61-45 shutdown win over Tennessee Tech, helping the Trojans in a 13-0 run that started the second half and put the game out of reach.

Her defensive effort (seven defensive rebounds, three steals and three blocks) helped hold TTU to season lows in points, field goals made and assists. Against Tennessee State, she scored 25 points and for most of the game had as many points as the Lady Tigers themselves.

Kourouma herself even out-scored TSU in the fourth quarter, 7-6. She grabbed 9 rebounds and 2 steals in the game, while helping to hold Tennessee State under 40 points and limiting TSU to just 1 single assist in the game while forcing 21 turnovers, holding the Lady Tigers to single digit scoring in three of the four quarters.

Even more impressively, Kourouma only committed 1 turnover on the week while dishing out 2 assists and drew 10 fouls. She did all of that while averaging less than 30.0 minutes played per game.

This is Kourouma's first OVC Player of the Week honor this season and third conference player of the week award of her career. She was named the Sun Belt Conference's Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks last season.

Kourouma and Little Rock embark on a long road trip this week starting with a Thursday game at Morehead State that begins a three-game road swing.
