INDIANAPOLIS – After securing a 13
th regular season title in the past 16 years and becoming the first Ohio Valley Conference program to win a championship in its first season in the league, Little Rock has been named the National Team of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for games ending Sunday, Feb. 19.
This marks the first time Little Rock has received the national recognition and the first time an Ohio Valley Conference team – men's or women's – has been named the National Team of the Week.
Little Rock (18-9, 15-1 OVC) secured at least a share of the OVC regular season championship after recording wins over Southern Indiana (58-50) and Eastern Illinois (46-42) last week. After holding EIU – who entered the week tied with the Trojans for the conference lead in the standings – to just 42 points, Little Rock became the first team since the 1974-75 season to hold Eastern Illinois to under 45 points multiple times in the same season. The Trojans previously limited the Panthers to 44 points on Jan. 14.
Winners of 10 straight games and 16 of their past 18, Little Rock heads to SIUE on Thursday ranking fourth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 52.0 points per game. The Maroon and Silver are allowing just 46.6 points per game in conference play this season.
A victory over the Cougars on Thursday will secure the outright regular season championship and clinch the No. 1 seed in next week's OVC Tournament. Tip-off on Thursday at SIUE is set for 4 p.m. with the game being televised nationally on ESPNU.
