OVC tags Roman with third Defensive Player of the Week honor in five weeks

LITTLE ROCK — In what is becoming a Monday tradition this fall, junior libero Andrea Roman has earned her third Defensive Player of the Week award from the Ohio Valley Conference and second in a row, as the league announced its weekly winners early this afternoon.
 
Roman has won the award in three of the five weeks the OVC has announced winners, and is the fourth week overall that a Little Rock volleyball athlete has been among the recipients. Roman was involved in an on-court collision with teammate Kaylee Smith during Saturday's win over SEMO, but she bounced back to tally a career-high 37 digs.
 
"It's such a great honor for Andrea to win this award three times," head coach Van Compton said. "This speaks to how strong our defense is with her in the libero position. It showed a lot of character and toughness for her to be hurt the way she was, and still perform at such a high level."
 
After being down on the floor for several minutes, Roman regained her composure to lead the defensive charge and help the Trojans rally from a 2-1 deficit. Despite SEMO's efforts to direct as many balls as possible toward the battered Roman, she responded and met the challenge, eventually helping the Trojans win the match in five.
 
"It feels amazing to be recognized for the third time this season, but I couldn't do it without my teammates and coaches pushing me every day," Roman said. "Even after being hurt against SEMO, I wanted to show resilience and keep competing for my team. SEMO kept challenging me, but I took it as motivation to push harder, and I'm proud of how we fought together on defense."
 
Roman's performance vaulted her from sixth to fourth on the program's list for career digs (1,198). She currently ranks 10^th nationally and first in the OVC in digs per set (5.18), while also sitting 15^th nationally and leading the league in total digs (259). As a team, Little Rock is 12^th nationally in digs per set (16.96) and 29^th in total digs (848).
