Little Rock to Play in Puerto Rico Tournament

HUMACO, Puerto Rico – The Little Rock women's golf team tees off Tuesday morning at the Puerto Rico Iguana Invitational, a three-day event that runs through Thursday and features a competitive mid-major field.
The eight-team tournament includes several familiar opponents for the Trojans, including in-state rivals Arkansas State and Central Arkansas, as well as Ball State, Georgia State, Tarleton State, Tulane, and Western Carolina.

"We are excited to play here. This is a tournament our team really enjoys," Little Rock head coach Jenna Birch said. "The course is great, and it is usually a little warmer here."
Little Rock enters the week with momentum after a strong runner-up finish at the Great River Cup, where the Trojans excelled in match play.

"We played very well there, and that is what we want to continue," Birch said. "We want to keep improving. We worked hard while we were at home to make sure we are prepared."

Sophomore lara Martin has paced the Trojans during the early spring season. She was named OVC Female Golfer of the Month for February after opening the month with a standout performance at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate. Martin finished tied for 12th at six-over par against a deep national field at Hammock Creek Golf Club, highlighted by a two-under-par 70 in the final round. She narrowly missed a top-10 finish while leading the Trojans with steady play across all three rounds, earning OVC Female Golfer of the Week honors on Feb. 5.

Martin followed that effort with a dominant showing at the Great River Cup, posting a perfect 3-0 record in match play and helping Little Rock secure a runner-up finish, tied with Southern Miss. She opened with a 3&2 victory over Louisiana-Monroe's Daniela Campillo Martinez, then earned a 1UP win over James Madison's Bella Flores before closing with another 1UP victory against Arkansas State's Carolina Hughes. Her unbeaten performance earned her a second OVC Female Golfer of the Week honor on Feb. 26.

"I am happy for her because she has worked hard to make this happen," Birch said. "We are excited to see how she will continue to improve the rest of the season."
