LITTLE ROCK - The Little Rock soccer team was named 2019-20 Team Academic Award winners by United Soccer Coaches this past week for the second consecutive year. It was also the 11th time in program history that the Trojans were recognized since the award was instituted in 1996.
College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster for the 2019-20 academic year.
"We are all student athletes and the student aspect comes first," said Doro Greulich, a redshirt senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.88. "Even though we enjoy playing soccer and being on the field, the priority for us is to earn a degree and prepare us for our future during our time at college."
"Our team has always set a standard of what is expected not only on the field but also in the classroom," added junior Abril Lucio, who holds a 3.84 grade-point average. "We all do our best to keep that standard high so the next class coming in is able to do the same."
During the 2019-20 academic year, Little Rock soccer recorded a cumulative 3.68 GPA. In the Spring 2020 semester specifically, 88% of the team had a grade-point average of 3.00 or better, while seven boasted a perfect 4.00.
The team helped the Little Rock Trojans to a cumulative department GPA of 3.36 for the 2019-20 school year, setting another impressive record for Little Rock student-athletes. The performance extends the department's impressive streak of semesters above a 3.00 to 16-straight, continuing to show Little Rock soccer's commitment to success in the classroom.
"It's always been an expectation to perform academically," junior Hilma Svalander explained, a standout 4.0 student. "Coming in as a freshman you know that the team has high academic standards and you are expected to follow them. We want to be excellent on the field and in the classroom and continue that legacy."
