Bergros Asgeirsdottir Named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week

Asgeirsdottir earns her first career weekly conference honor

NEW ORLEANS – Little Rock fifth-year defender Bergros Asgeirsdottir has been named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. The weekly honor is the first of Asgeirsdottir's career and the first for the Trojans in the 2021 soccer season.

Asgeirsdottir played a key role both offensively and defensively for Little Rock over the past week as the Trojans went 2-0-1. Offensively, she scored a pair of crucial goals for Little Rock, including the game-winning goal off a penalty kick in the 96th minute to defeat Troy 1-0 in the Sun Belt opener. Two days later, she converted on a rebound off her own penalty kick in the 85th minute to tally the game-tying goal against South Alabama, leading the way to a 1-1 double overtime draw.

Defensively, Asgeirsdottir played all 296 minutes in the three game span and anchored a Little Rock defense that allowed just one goal in three games while limiting the opposition to a total of just eight combined shots on goal. She was integral in helping Little Rock register a pair of shutouts on the week, upping the Trojans' total to a league-best five, allowing just 0.74 goals per game.

It is a fitting honor for the Selfoss, Iceland native, coming on a week in which she etched her name in the Little Rock record books. Against Jackson State, she surpassed Jane Picarelli (2007-10) for the most minutes played in a Trojan uniform, currently sitting at 7,421. The match against South Alabama was also her 85th career game at Little Rock, surpassing Picarelli's previous record of 84.

Asgeirsdottir now becomes the 13th different Trojan to earn Sun Belt weekly accolades, upping the program's total to 19 total honors. She is the first to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors since Liesa Seifert on Sept. 11, 2018, and joins Siefert, Sara Small (2015, 2016) and Hali Long (2016) as the fourth Trojan to be recognized as Defensive Player of the Week.

Asgeirsdottir and the rest of the Trojans are getting set to take the pitch in Itta Bena, Mississippi, facing Mississippi Valley State Tuesday at 4 p.m. Little Rock then returns home to resume Sun Belt play Sunday, hosting Georgia Southern at 1 p.m. at the Coleman Sports Complex.
