LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock head women's basketball coach
Joe Foley announced Wednesday that graduate transfer
Toyosi Abiola has joined the Trojans program.
Abiola, the MAAC Rookie of the Year at Iona before she transferred to Eastern Michigan, has battled knee injuries for a few seasons before finally returning to the court last year.
"We are very excited about Toyosi and what she will bring to the program," Foley said of his program's newest addition. "She has great athleticism and her mental toughness to battle through the last couple of years has been impressive. Her hunger to get on the floor and play at the high level she is capable of will help elevate everyone's game around her."
Abiola was a standout phenom in her first collegiate season at Iona where she scored 20 points in her collegiate debut as the Gaels faced Arizona. She was the MAAC's Rookie of the Year and a nine-time MAAC Rookie of the Week selection as she averaged 11.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
"I'm really excited to see one of the most explosive athletes to ever come out of the UK play in such a successful program as Little Rock," said Jackson Gibbons, Abiola's high school coach. "Having watched her flourish since she was 14 years old, I know her skillset, work ethic and sheer tenacity will excel under the coaches there, we are all super proud of her this side of the pond and excited for what the future holds."
After a year at Iona, Abiola transferred to Eastern Michigan where she was forced to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules before a knee injury sidelined her for two more seasons. She returned to the court last season, averaging 5.3 minutes over six games, scoring two points against Toledo and grabbing three rebounds at Ball State.
Now she is fully rehabilitated and ready for a fresh start, joining Little Rock's Team.
Abiola joins seven other newcomers on Little Rock's roster for the 2022-23 season, the Trojans' first in the Ohio Valley Conference. They will combine with five returners on a team that has advanced to the semifinals of their conference tournament in 15 of the past 16 years and are guided by Foley, whose 833 wins ranks third in the nation among active Division I head coaches.
Season tickets are now on sale for the Trojans' 2022-23 campaign and as Little Rock begins play in the Ohio Valley Conference this season, you've got to OVC it! Little Rock's upcoming season will be bringing new opponents, new regional rivalries and
